Reviews:

A Must Watch Mystery Thriller.
Though I have not read the J B Priestley story, I have to admit this tale ranks in my top five. Whenever there’s an adaptation made I have to watch it. This, however, is one of the better ones. And it comes down to the fact that everyone involved does a near-perfect job.

From Desmond Davis’ screenplay to Guy Hamilton’s direction to the excellent cast and their exquisite portrayals. The only reason it doesn’t score a perfect 10 is down to my personal preferences. I highly recommend this film to everybody, especially mystery writers. The way this story is structured and the way the characters play off each other in the situation is genius.

Though a woman is dead and the five family members appear to have had a hand in her circumstances, only three of them are genuinely concerned about her suicide. Ma and Pa are stoic and even take the Micky out of their kids for their softer and more emotional ways. It’s these characteristics and ethics which add a deeper interest for the viewer. It’ll even get you thinking. One of my favourite scenes is when the inspector starts to question the mother The daughter realising what’s happening warns her mother to not answer or to be careful what she says. Of course, she doesn’t heed her offsprings good advise. Oh, and does it bite her arse later in the film.

The story is expertly structured and full to the brim of interesting, relatable, and believable characters.

Though, for the most part, the direction is average, Hamilton is a master of pace. The timing is perfect. He slows down and speeds up at the exact right times. He knows how to play for humour as well as suspense and tension. Though the thing I liked most is the subtle camera angles and composition. Three scenes are memorable to me. The scene with the mother and daughter. Mommy dearest is in the foreground while the cautionary daughter is behind her. Hamilton films this from a slightly elevated position adding, not only to the tension but to the dynamic of the women’s relationship. The second is when the drunken son escorts the woman home and sits on the curb in the rain. Once again perfect composition with the lower camera angle at the sons’ feet while the woman stands on the top step in the open doorway. This time he’s working with the comedic “Drunk” element and the tease of will she or won’t she invite him in? Lastly, the scene when the family realise that the inspector might not be exactly who he purports to be. The father opens the door to reveal the inspector sitting in the rocking chair. This is filmed from the height of the fathers head so he and the audience are looking down at the inspector. This is only to get the turn of the inspectors head, his stare, and his look of confidence and resolve to its fullest effect.

I wish more films and shows were filmed in such a well thought out fashion.

As for the acting. There is nothing to say except faultless. Though Alastair Sim is better known for his more comedic roles I believe this is one of his best. He still carries a lightness with him, which is a great thing as the subject matter is a tad dark. His airiness adds to Inspector Poole’s confident manner as well as keeping the film and story buoyant and stimulating. It could so easily have been a depressing tale.

All the other actors and actresses give a hundred per cent in their performances. Though, I would have liked to have changed the actor who played the fiance – even though he does a good job, I didn’t think he suited it as best as he could.

This for me is a must-watch film. If you like your old classic movies then give this a look-see. If you want a good film to waste a Sunday afternoon then this is definitely the one I’d recommend. If you’re a fan of the genre and not watched this one yet then do yourself a favour and get a copy. And if you have seen it before, dust of the copy and watch it again. Then, for all the wannabe screenwriters and moviemakers out there, you should watch this to see how it should be done.

Come over to my The Game Is Afoot & Guilty Pleasures lists to see where I’ve ranked this film.
