He tells them of the suicide of a young woman named Eva Smith and though they all claim not to have known her the inspector demonstrates that each in their own way contributed to her downfall, by having her dismissed from work or, in the young men’s cases, having sexual relationships and then abandoning her. After Goole has left the youngsters feel ashamed and the engagement is halted but Arthur Birling, doubting the inspector’s authority, rings the local police station. This is the prelude to a double shock which will lead to the family’s humiliation and ruin.
Plot: Northern England, 1912. The dinner of a wealthy family is interrupted by Inspector Goole, who only announces that a young woman has committed suicide. Then, he simply asks everyone present, one by one, if they knew her.

A great version of an old classic
Having seen the original movie and a rather strange stage version starring the late Barry Foster, I had no doubts about the content of this telemovie – but was curious about how this modern version would treat it. Brilliantly cast, it did not disappoint, although it did tend to drag at times. On the whole the suspense was well maintained and it stayed quite close to the original, although the later scenes after the Inspector left the house were new and added little to the overall story. In fact it would have been better without them. This is a story that has to be taken at face value (the mystical part aside) – it would be easy to question the possibility that all the persons gathered together in that household had the impact they are supposed to have had on one young woman. It was written as a morality play, very relevant to its times and even today relevance can be found in many of the disclosures made. It tells us to think before we act and to be less likely to prejudge and to take responsibility for our actions. An interesting story, that makes you think – what more can one ask for?
True Christianity
True, original Christianity is put forth here by J. B. Priestly as the antidote to typical human hubris and selfish thought, word, and action. I’ve seen many thousands of films, and this one is by far my all-time favorite. The acting? Great by any standard. The set? Perfect. But the message! You will find that it is as close to holy scripture as any message has ever been in a film.
