My kind of film. Doesn’t spoon feed everything to you. Great acting, exciting, and unpredictable. And the setting was both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Great film!
This movie had a lot of potential. I love survival stories, especially in an arctic setting. This movie is everything I’d love, until I started watching it. Rule number one in filmmaking, don’t insult the intelligence of your audience. And boy was this bad. The main character is just not cut out for this, he should not have survived. Some examples;
When the bear is trying to get at him in the den, instead of using the pick ax in his hand he wastes a perfectly good flare.
When he spots the helicopter at the end he immediately turns around and runs downhill out of sight of the potential rescuers. Why? To grab the unconscious girl and spend a good amount of crucial time dragging her up the hill. Then he lights a flare (surprisingly he hasn’t wasted them all trying to scare polar bears), and then lights his jacket on fire. If they didn’t see his flaming jacket then he surely would have froze to death, an insulting series of wrongdoings.
When he’s cooking food he leaves the burner on, wasting precious fuel to let his food simmer when it’s done cooking.
When he’s treating the woman’s wound he pours the liquid on her, why not wet a cloth or something and dab it instead of having the majority of it just roll off her onto the floor.
When the bear finds his fish stash, common sense; he shouldn’t have left it outside in the first place, what did he expect?
When he fell through the hole in the ice and somehow got his leg stuck underneath a boulder, that just didn’t add up. Him getting his foot stuck that bad underneath a giant rock just doesn’t make sense unless the rock rolled onto his foot, which it didn’t. The impact injury would have been enough or maybe he could have banged his knee on it for a more believable scene. But how he reacts after is even worse, rolling over ONTO the damaged foot/leg.
And that’s just the technical stuff. Some other things I noticed were;
When he pull his leg out from under that big rock, he went and put all his weight on that leg when he layed down right after. If you broke your foot or twisted your leg that bad the last thing you’d want to do is roll over with it under you. And then after that he just had a bit of a limp, was still able to walk fine. I don’t buy it. When he wraps his leg up with his scarf he ties it around his pant leg. When he’s walking it’s just gonna loosen and come right off, wouldn’t do him any good. He should have tied it around his bare leg so it stays put.
The woman being unconscious would have choked on the food and water he was giving her, she should have died straight away.
The man obviously made the terrible choice of adding an extra 3 days in his trip, on dangerous terrain. Even if he did make it without issues he would have burned up energy so fast, a few pieces of fish won’t get you very far in those conditions doing that kind of exercise.
Again maybe this was all the point, a dimwit man getting stuck out in the arctic miraculously survives. But again, I don’t buy it.
Overall I’m disappointed in this, I really wanted to like it.
