His decision is prompted by his desire to find Lili Alfredo, who disappeared fourteen years earlier following the death of her husband, The Flying Alfredo. At the time it was believed that Alfredo dived to his death deliberately when he realized his wife loved Matt and not him. Toni, a beautiful trapeze performer, raised by Matt is actually Lili’s daughter, and she is in love with Steve McCabe, one of the stars on Matt’s show. Doing their first show in Barcelona, aboard a ship, the ship keels over and Matt loses his show. Now broke, he leaves for Paris with Toni, Steve and his long-time friend, Cap Carson, to seek a job with Colonel Purdy’s Wild West Show. But a year later, Matt has rebuilt his own show. First to be signed is a remarkable 12-year-old wire-walker named Giovana, and her guardian, Tojo the Clown, whose real named is Aldo Alfredo, formerly of the Flying Alfredos. Continuing his search for Lili, Matt’s show plays Brussels, Vienna, Prague, Copenhagen, Rome, Milan, and finally Madrid, where Lili is part of the audience.
Plot: Circus owner Matt Masters is beset by disasters as he attempts a European tour of his circus. At the same time, he is caught in an emotional bind between his adopted daughter and her mother.

Behind the … stage
It’s not an in depth look behind the scenes of a circus. But you will get to see a few things that you might not have known. The core is the story of Wayne and his family. His two families so to speak. It’s nicely told, even if some things seem to happen just like that, without much of a problem (or the problem being resolved too easily).
There are quite a few stunts on hand here and they are decent enough. Though sometimes when John Waynes character is doing risky things, it is so obviously not John Wayne but his stunt man, that it almost hurts. That is of course something that should not be a big problem. Or do not let it be one, if you can.
Great cast and good circus acts in good circus movie, stolen by CC
Marred slightly by obvious process shots, and mediocre directing, “Circus World” ultimately excites and thrills, with a story that moves between and among the small and intimate to the large and encompassing.
Claudia Cardinale, who liked to be called “CC,” steals the movie, despite all the competition, because she is gorgeous, cute, charming, and her combination Franco-Italian personality and speech just sweeps everything and everybody away. She is simply adorable, as well as beautiful.
Competing in the beauty department is Rita Hayworth, apparently already beginning to suffer from illnesses that would damage and eventually kill her.
John Wayne looks slim and trim, and it’s hard to believe it was only five more years till he would again team up with director Henry Hathaway for “True Grit” in which he would play the over-weight drunk Rooster Cogburn.
John Smith needed a better director, and I wonder if Hathaway too was already beginning to show the ravages of illnesses that seem to be the causes for the rapid decline of his work.
Lloyd Nolan gave, as usual, an outgoing and strong portrayal, and it’s intriguing to see him with John Wayne. Legend says that when John Ford asked Wayne for a recommendation for someone to play the Ringo Kid in “Stagecoach, ” Duke Wayne said “Lloyd Nolan.”
No doubt Nolan would have been great, if completely different from Wayne, in the role since he was usually great in any role.
Real circus acts round out the cast and even when other activity is going on around them, it’s hard not to pay attention. In fact, they help make one want to re-watch “Circus World” again and again.
And you can since there is a great print at YouTube and I highly recommend “Circus World” for many reasons.
