Seagal as the Punisher? Give me a break!
CODE OF HONOR is the very latest in a series of star action vehicles for bloated and charisma-free Steven Seagal, the former great who has been making bad film after bad film for just under twenty years now. Bizarrely, this one’s not been shot in Eastern Europe but Utah for a change, although ironically it’s even worse than Seagal’s previous Romanian and Bulgarian adventures.
The story sees Seagal as a high-tech vigilante who goes around taking down drug dealers and criminals with his sniper rifle. The police are on the case and so are various bad guys who want to take revenge for the slayings. What quickly becomes apparent is that Seagal is nothing more than a supporting player in his own movie. He gets little screen time and just one or two fight scenes which are laughably poor.
The film has plenty of cheesy CGI blood which looks even more ridiculous than that we saw in THE EXPENDABLES. Despite the violence it’s a real bore to sit through with barely any plot, a distinct lack of characterisation, and irrelevant sub-plots. Craig Sheffer and James Russo are two of the tired looking actors who show up to pick up their pay and keep their heads down. The ridiculous climax is particularly poorly handled and leaves the viewer thinking “is that it?”.
A REALLY GOOD VIGILANTE THRILLER WITH A NICE MIX OF DEATH WISH & THE PUNISHER.
Another low-budget straight to dvd Steven Seagal film but it’s one of the best of his straight to dvd catalogue.
First off i have to say that yes I’m still an old school Steven Seagal fan, i grew up watching & loving his Awesome 90’s action films like Marked For Death, Out For Justice & Hard to Kill among others & i still find some really good Gems amongst alot of the crap he constantly brings out. There’s been some great “Gems” of Seagal’s DTV output, such as Driven To Kill, The Keeper, A Dangerous Man, Against The Dark, Pistol Whipped & now, Code of Honour!!!
The opening to this urban vigilante Thriller is excellent. We get some cool music & a swirling night time view of a city & then the camera goes up to the top of a building & there’s Seagal smoking a cigar while loading up his snipers rifle. It’s a great opening & the first shootout sequence is Awesome with a real Charles Bronson “Death Wish” feel & even “The Punisher” at times. Code of Honour is definitely a well made film, yes it’s very low budget but it’s made well & mostly looks & feels like a proper film & not just a tacky cheap flick. Steven Seagal plays a good part here as Colonel Robert Sikes, a deadly man on a mission to clean up the city’s dangerous streets by assassinating all drug dealers, street gangs & any one he thinks deserves to die. Seagal really suits this role of a bad#ss Anti-hero who often goes to far in his Vigilante quest. The other main part here is of Craig Sheffer (NightBreed) who turns in an excellent performance here as troubled & mysterious FBI Agent William Porter, who is after Sikes but also has a mysterious & tragic past. Craig Sheffer is really good here & gives a messed-up & angry performance for his burned out Agent Porter who is very troubled but who is also a good guy & has his own moral code. There’s some great scenes & dialogue between Seagal & Sheffer, their characters both want to rid the country of the scum & human trash that cause misery & they are both very skilled & extremely dangerous & both used to work together as special forces but now they both have their own moral code & agendas. Sikes is more lethal as he strikes he will blow up a whole seedy strip club to get his bad guys even if innocent people are there too & Porter doesn’t agree with that & will only kill those that deserve it. Two good leads here sharing the screen. Also the third good cast member is Louis Mandylor as the good Detective Peterson, who is caught in the middle of these two Vigilante soldiers. Now i agree with Vigilante justice as we know in real life most of the time the evil scum out there get away with all the evil they do & the justice system doesn’t work at all, so it’s nice to see Vigilantes taking out the trash.
Code of Honour, is well directed by Michael Winnick, he uses big swooping camera shots that swoop down & up & around to show us a lay-out of the scene or a building & it looks cool. The music is just background noise really & nothing special in it’s score except the cool opening music. The look is fine with some good night time cinematography & the tone of this Action Thriller is gritty & violent. Some of the action sequences are excellent for a low-budget straight to dvd flick such as that Awesome opening shootout slaughter of the drugs deal & an Awesome ally way night fight & plenty of gory shots to the head as our “Super Vigilante” takes out gang members from far away & it all looks Awesome with blood splatter & bodies all over.
This is a great Vigilante action Thriller & a great Steven Seagal “Gem” who does play a decent role here & actually acts!!! I like the fact Seagal comes & goes as he’s the Anti-hero, he pops up shoots or blows-up something & vanishes. The movie really is owned by Craig Sheffer who carries the whole film really & is great on screen. A good little cast & a good little movie. Great late night entertainment!!!
