Tim, who had scoffed at Nick’s idea and passed on an opportunity to get in on the deal, can only watch as Nick’s fortune — and Tim’s own envy — grow to equally outrageous proportions. When the flames of jealousy are fanned by an oddball drifter (Walken) who imposes himself into the situation, Tim’s life careens wildly out of control … taking Nick’s with it.
Plot: A man becomes increasingly jealous of his friend’s newfound success.

colorful but uneven
In ENVY, Ben Stiller plays Tim whos neighbor, Nick(Jack Black) invents an item called “Vapoorize”. When you spray it on dog poo, it disappears. After vapoorize becomes a hit, Tim get’s envious of Nick.
I’m surprised at the terrible reviews this is getting. I mean, I can’t say it was more than 2 and a half out of 4, but it wasn’t terrible. It was uneven, somewhat funny, a bit flighty, and occasionally realistic. The whole thing with Christopher Walken’s role had nothing to do with the story. Whenever he came on screen, I was disappointed. And although this is occasionally funny, due to the cast, it’s not funny enough.
ENVY– **1/2 outta ****
PG-13: language, brief comic violence, and some sexual/crude humor.
disappointing because of the lost opportunities
Envy is a pretty standard affair, and a fairly bizarre one, but it could’ve been more- especially coming from the likes of Barry Levinson (director), Larry David (producer), and Ben Stiller, Jack Black and (always dependable until here) Christopher Walken/ It’s sort of an extension, speaking of David, of Sour Grapes- two friends, one comes up with a stupid idea for the Va-poo-rizer, which will remove dog feces via spray. It works, somehow, and Black becomes rich. But Stiller deep down can’t stand it, and one night kills Black’s prized horse with a bow and arrow whilst drunk.
There’s some potential here, even with the sophomoric premise, but it all just falls apart from a screenplay that is just too, well, content with being average. The dialog should sparkle and crack by the actors at work, but only Walken, occasionally, brings some fire to the proceedings, and Stiller especially is only good for some ranting and some would-be subtle strokes of personality. It’s not outrageous enough to be a winning black comedy (or as outrageous as it thinks it is), and nowhere near subtle enough to get classified in the Larry David school of everyday humor about ‘nothing. It is simply…nothing. Vapoorized into the $1 bin at Wal-Mart, where it doesn’t serve much of a chance at being revived by the stars’ fans, and only with the bare-minimum, if that, for becoming a so-bad-it’s-good movie for cult fans.
