Well done and very unique, loved it!
I’m a baby boomer who grew up with a very limited and censored variety of movies, maybe that’s why I watch so many now. I watch big-budget and low-budget B-movies, and like to give indies and low-budget a fair chance, and I’ve stumbled on to some I’ve enjoyed way more than a $50 million clone! In the vast sea of entries, it’s easy to miss those who have no real marketing. I’m really happy this one came up in a browse of horror movies. It had a slow start, which I feel sure was intentional, and it’s not a super gory slasher or dependent on special effects. It’s a psychological, character-driven story, and we get to know the few characters in a 3D kind of way, rather than a just a faceless villain who gets back up after being shot. I watch those too, but like variety. We even get an explanation of why this person is attempting to kill the victim, and although his reasoning seems ridiculous to most of us, it’s still more of an explanation than we often get in movies. He really needed a therapist rather than a target! I felt a lot of empathy for the victims, especially his sons. The acting was believable and the circumstances were absolutely possible. It’s another cautionary tale that sadly gives credence to the idea of why it’s so hard to trust people who offer to help. I was satisfied with the ending and enjoyed the ride. There was no annoying fake music score to make it hard to hear the action or dialog. I found it plausible and while it’s nothing really new, it’s the acting, directing, cinematography and good choice of setting that combines into an enjoyable story. I know I don’t agree with other reviewers but I like this film a lot and would watch another of their productions without hesitation. I even liked the song playing while the ending credits rolled. I’ve seen some really poor quality productions and in my humble opinion, this is not one of those. As I said, it did start off a little slow but it quickly gathered steam and it was worth the wait (and getting to know some background information first) so that the end result to me, was really worth watching. It won’t satisfy adrenaline junkies or heavy gore fans, it’s more of the drama-horror genre. I should also add that I’m not affiliated with this film in case anyone is suspicious of my review. I haven’t reviewed a whole lot of films. I’m a native of New Orleans who just likes to watch a lot of movies.
Spoilers follow …
Thom (Jay Sutherland) is very attracted to Stacey (Helen Crevel), but she is in denial about this. Why else would he drive her all the way from London to the peak district for a wedding he isn’t even invited to? It’s all a bit unfair on Thom, but not as unfair as the fact that he’s accidentally shot by a recently released ex-prisoner who is showing his son how to hunt deer on private land.
Realising there’s more than a chance of him going back to Her Majesty’s Pleasure as a result of this, the miscreant Weaver (Andrew Coughlan) intends to make amends by hunting Stacey, who is the only one who could engineer his downfall.
This is a solid, steadily paced thriller featuring some terrific scenery, a good line in plot detail (the ongoing notion of Stacey’s perfume giving her presence away, the lack of driving knowledge that impedes her getaway) and some occasionally lacklustre acting. Crevel overplays some of her earlier scenes, whilst villainous Coughlan underplays some of his.
Horror film idiocy, of course, takes a hold. Hunted through the night by a wild man with a gun, Stacey finds a deserted building, which she sneaks inside. Does she shut the door behind her? You’d think so, but no.
I enjoyed this a lot. ‘Footsoldier’ doesn’t set out to change the world, operates within its budget and has plenty of twists in the story to stop it ever becoming stale. There’s a moment when Stacey pulls out Thom’s wallet from her pocket, whilst taking a rest in the woodlands some way through her ordeal. In it, she finds a snapshot of her and Thom together, and breaks down. It’s a good, touching moment in amidst the relentless chase.
