Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam – a well-intentioned blabbermouth who’s convinced that the house is haunted. Kylie dismisses Miriam’s superstitions as nothing more than a distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables & small-town gossip. However, when she too becomes privy to unsettling whispers & strange bumps in the night, she begins to wonder whether she’s inherited her overactive imagination, or if the house is in fact possessed by a hostile spirit who’s less than happy about the new living arrangement.
Plot: When Kylie Bucknell is sentenced to home detention, she’s forced to come to terms with her unsociable behaviour, her blabbering mother and a hostile spirit who seems less than happy about the new living arrangement.

Reviews:

A horror film which also happens to be funny
With a few exemptions I’m not a huge fan of horror comedies as they are rarely scary nor really that funny. What I like about Housebound is that it is first and foremost a horror film, which also happens to be funny. The humor develops naturally out of the situations and the characters. The gags don’t feel shoehorned in and it isn’t a parody of the horror genre. And in a genre where characterisation often comes as an afterthought, the characters here feel well rounded and very real.

The performances are fantastic all round. Morgana O’Reilly as Kylie is one tough cookie of a scream queen. After participating in a failed ATM robbery she gets sentenced to eight months house arrest at her mother’s rambling country house, which her mother suspects may be haunted. The fact that she is trapped in the house with her ineffectual stepdad and her blabbermouth of a mother, makes Kylie even more cranky than she already was and the fact that something spooky stalks the house at night isn’t helping her mood either. In a great cast the stand out is Rima Te Wiata as Kylie’s none too bright but well intentioned mother. There will be people complaining about unlikeable characters but who cares when they are as fun and as well drawn as they are here. Nobody strains to give a comedy performance, in best Antipodean tradition the humor is totally deadpan.

The set-up is similar to the forgettable Famke Janssen horror flick 100 Feet but this film does the premise of being under house arrest in a haunted house justice. If the film has one flaw then it’s one typical of many a first film: Housebound runs on a little too long and would have made a perfect 90 minute film. It takes a while to get going. But that’s a small complaint when the film gets so much right. The film really hits its stride in the last third, when all hell breaks lose and the plot twists and turns. Best horror film of 2014.

Comedy element is the only thing holding it back
This film reminds me a lot of Peter Jackson’s 1996 film ‘The Frighteners’. That film had the potential to be a truly great little horror flick but was ruined because Jackson couldn’t resist adding a comedic layer that took away all attempts at seriousness the film had. ‘Housebound’ has a very similar complex. There’s a truly great little story here, where not everything is as it seems, but because the filmmakers couldn’t resist having wacky comedians as characters it completely loses any edge it may have had. Is it a New Zealand thing, where we just can’t help but throw jokes into our scripts willy-nilly even when the scene at hand absolutely demands seriousness? I suspect this is largely the answer. American films simply do not make this mistake.

The first half of the movie is far inferior to the second half. The first half feels like a “seen it all before”, not at all well executed paranormal horror movie that was going to be tedious to get through. Then the second half kicks off and we realise there is a lot more than originally met the eye going on here. There are some excellent twists and turns and things that originally seemed weak in the first half are actually proved to be quite important and clever. I fear some may write this film off too quickly, but I implore you to keep with it – thing’s do get markedly better.

With some slightly more charismatic and believable actors/characters, a removal of 90% of the film’s attempts at humour, some slight tweaking of the script structure and a slightly bigger budget we could have had an absolute horror classic on our hands here. Unfortunately I’m not sure how well overseas audiences will receive ‘Housebound’. I’m led to believe ‘The Frighteners’ didn’t do particularly well and as mentioned these are two very similar films. ‘Black Sheep’ is another New Zealand film that could have been a lot better for having not had the comedic element infused with the horror. I await the day when New Zealand decides to have a crack at a pure horror film and show the world what we can truly produce. I just hope I don’t have to wait too long for it.
