The film focuses on the time from 1945 to 1950 when the communists took over, but also goes back a little further in Horáková’s life into the late 1930s

Excellent overview
I watched this movie because so many friends, young and old, who live in Prague and Plzen highly recommended it to me. Before watching the movie, the o my thing I knew about Milada was that she was a heroic woman who was outspoken against communism. So, I didn’t have much to go on, and I decided to not research her prior to the movie – watching strictly on the high recommendations from my Czech friends.

Without knowing much about her, I can confidently say the movie leaves out so much of Milada’s story. However, it would be very difficult to make such a movie without it being at least 8 hours long. That said, I would say that this movie is as much about the era surrounding Milada and the principles on which she stood than it was about her.

The historical subtleties stirs me to do more research about Milada Horakova as well as her husband, Bohuslav Horak.

I do think it would be great if the BBC would do a mini-series as a compliment to this movie.

Brought an important part of history to life
This was a well-scripted, decently acted docu-drama about a little known but incredibly courageous woman who held her own against the Nazis and then the Communists.

There were some issues on editing and timelines certainly, but I think we need to look at the bigger picture here rather than that which could have been done better production and direction-wise.

This was a woman of remarkable courage and bravery who had a set of core values to which we should all be inspired by, and emulate as best we can.

Having said that, despite integrity, honesty, decency, compassion and the highest of service being amongst the very best of values to which all of us should aspire ( as she did ), one questions as to why Milada did not have the wisdom to leave when she had the chances to do so. And which resulted in her evil execution and endangerment to her family. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but I have the very strong instinct that Milada had the foresight that this might happen.

But this detracts in no way from a lady who was not just a true Czech hero, but one who is a hero to us all…
