Is it actually a Spoof?
I had literally just finished watching Scary movie, and this popped up as a suggestion so I gave it a try. On comparison Scary Movie was more realistic, better acted, and had a much tighter plot. It’s like the writer had gotten drunk, started reading Agatha Christie’s And then there were none, and thought up the most silly costume they could. I am so sad to see this genre of movie go down the pan, The Scream and I know what you did last Summer films were so good, this dire attempt at a film seemed to try and recreate that feeling, but failed miserably. The acting was dire, Perez Hilton’s scream at finding Ashleigh was like something out of a first year School drama production. It actually looks pretty good, the cameraman and editing team did a good job at least.

A sad reminder at how good the slasher genre used to be.

Don’t Quote Me On That
A lot of the reviews here are slating this movie for being a generic slasher, but I’m not so sure it actually is. It is a simplistic set up: some friends go to a place and get slaughtered one by one, but simple doesn’t always mean generic, or bad for that matter.

What this movie does is work it’s simple structure and add some nice additions in that subvert the slasher genre, like the killer bolting when they see a gun, only to come back later and use it themselves. This took them away from being anything supernatural and made them clearly human, adding to the general ‘whodunit’ nature of the plot.

Overall this movie is full of homage to slasher of old, but it doesn’t fall into any major pitfalls that other efforts do. The effects work, the skin is titillating but not overbearing, the pacing is timed well, the gimmick of graduation works without feeling pointless, and characters are both likeable and unlikeable enough to make deaths interesting. If you are a fan of slashers then this film should satisfy you, if it works for what it is then should it really be trying to be anything else at the sacrifice of actually working?
