Sex and the City bashers be damned!!!
I am a 23 year old single woman living in Manhattan and I love and relate to this show. All though I am younger and poorer than these women, and I don’t get nearly as many men as they do (not to mention the fact that I’m Black!), I think this show has alot of insightful and funny things to say about being a woman in New York.
And to address the sex issue…I am so tired of the Madonna/Whore complex everyone in the country seems to be up to their eyeballs in. Get over it! Women like sex, they have sex, and they have sex with men they don’t like. So what? And so what if they continue to look for Mr. Right even when they’re with Mr. Right Now. What person man or woman hasn’t consistently done something, seemingly at cross-purposes with their intended goal in the name of love, lust, or companionship? Stop with the tired double standards (that includes HBO’s ban on full frontal male nudity on the show!)
Let’s address the real issue: We all wish we were getting it as much as Samantha–even it’s from just ONE person!!!
Really drags down the Women’s Movement!
I’m sorry. Yes, I know this show is entertaining at times and reminds me of the female version of Nip/Tuck without the surgical segments but I find it so demeaning for women in general to be seen as nothing more than predators of men. Okay, it’s a strong statement but there must be more to life than seeking the perfect mate, male or female. If you are not complete alone, you should seek to complete yourself before seeking somebody else to fill that need. We all want healthy stable relationships filled with love and happiness. I’m sorry but the spoofs on MadTV and Saturday Night Live sadly depict the main cast members as sex crazed women. So what if the guy isn’t good in bed, that doesn’t mean that much when most of the time all you want to do is sleep. Sex isn’t going to complete the relationship. I have seen lots of long-termed couples who stay together through good and bad times. Marriage and relationships are a partnership inside and outside the bedroom. The cast is first rate. Sarah Jessica Parker plays Carrie well but she is annoying. Believe me, nobody lives like that New York City. Women like Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda have to work 100 hours a week just to live there. My sister who lived there will tell you that it’s not Sex and the City at all. I watched this show a lot in London, England of all places while I was on vacation three years ago. Believe it or not they have a lot of American programs running over there. My favorite is Charlotte played by the wonderful Kristin Davis. I didn’t care for the segments in which she tries to convert to Judaism. I felt it was demeaning watching her being dismissed as a tart by the Rabbi. Miranda played by Cynthia Nixon came out of the closet after it was revealed that she was in a long-term relationship with another woman. There is talk that Samantha played by Kim Cattrall was not a welcome member of the cast. I think it had to do with the fact that her character got a lot more action. I think it’s sad that only three got along and Kim was the unwelcome guest. You would think it would be Cynthia but we’re wrong. I think it’s sad that gay men like producer Darren Starr assume that all straight women want to do is get laid with a man. There’s more to life than sex. If our country wasn’t so repressed and obsessed with sexuality, maybe we can accomplish so much more.
